It's that time (and about time).
I've found a server package that will be within the site budget and will offer the members the speed and service that they so deserve. But be aware that we will be experiencing DOWNTIME and the the site will be unavailable for posting. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. -------------------- Hashkafah.com: Think for Yourself™

Exciting! When is the Blessed Event going to occur ?
-------------------- Exist's friend's song, to the tune of The Star Spangled Banner
Let's say you can see, A hot and cold sink, Where so proudly, we wash, For netilas yadayim Whose filtered waters and bright shine, Through this mitzva'dig time, O'er our hands, we watch, Gallons of water streaming. And the hot water from here, gets filled with cold water down there, So don't turn on the hot water, or more will be boiled somewhere. Oh say does that negel vasser towel yet dry, Our cold and wet hands, and now we know the reason why! |

Exciting! When is the Blessed Event going to occur ? This week - hopefully before Shabbos. Can you be more specific? Who will be migrating the application and database over to the new server? Will he she be tuning TCP/IP and webserver parameters? Ethanpil, our senior resident technician, will be configuring the server and transferring the site over. I hope you have some alternative activity planned for us... Use notepad to write down your responses and then cut and paste them when the goes back up. Good news. Why is this down on page 3? Not anymore... When will the downtime take place, and for how long? mosheshmeal . This week. Not for more than 24 hours (depending on how long your server realizes the DNS propogation). -------------------- Hashkafah.com: Think for Yourself™

are you suggesting that ethanpil work during shabbos or yomtov? Maybe she is suggestion he should make Aliyah. And then do it on the "second day" of Yom Tov. -------------------- There are a number of ideas that literally form the backbone of Judaism. Without knowledge of these ideas, it is virtually impossible to know how Judaism came to be as it is today, or how it functions. Unfortunately, however, the more important the idea, the less the average person knows about it. - Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan, Handbook of Jewish Thought

Make sure you back up all the data!

I didn’t say a Jew should work on Shabbos or yomtov; but why can’t this transfer be done when most of us are offline ? Why does a Jew have to do it ?

Why can't the transfer take place over a Shabbos or a yomtov ? The dedicated server costs us money. So I'd rather not wait a week to start 2 hours before shabbos and then another few hours on motzei shabbos. We will TRY, however, to transfer the data at a late hour when few visitors are on. Who and how decided that the various occasional problems and error messages are caused by a lack of a dedicated server? I've been thinking about this EVERY DAY for the last year. At first, it was going to be about self-hosting with a server that's so powerful that it's unavailable from the hosting market. Then I learned that the needs of this site are minimal (a Pentium 4 with 1GB RAM will do the job) and that my server was overkill. Count that in with the hassle of configuring firewalls from DDOS attacks from int and spam hacks from all the other members of the site, I decided to go with a managed server and let them do all the work for me. This way, I pay monthly and don't have to waste my time doing maintenance when I could be modding. Speaking of modz, one MAJOR reason I did this is because we are installing a powerful SEO module which will make our topics and posts easily searchable from search engines. With a site that has user generated content on things that people are searching for, we will most definetly increase our member base and bring more life to our forums. -------------------- Hashkafah.com: Think for Yourself™

Thanks. More exposure to search engines is definitely a good thing.
But why do you think (or do you?) that a dedicated server will resolve the issues with the error messages that continue to pop up every now and then? -------------------- Kabel et ha-emet mi-mi she-omro.

But why do you think (or do you?) that a dedicated server will resolve the issues with the error messages that continue to pop up every now and then? Because the error messages are a result of the shared server (with G-d knows how many OTHER websites as well) gets overloaded and craps out. H.com relies entirely on an SQL database which means CPU processing power for every page. Unless he is considering an Apple IIe, even a modest dedicated server produced in the past 5 or 10 years should be MORE than enough to handle the needs of H.com..... -------------------- [/flirting]

Because the error messages are a result of the shared server (with G-d knows how many OTHER websites as well) gets overloaded and craps out. As long as that's established and proven, and not just speculation. I'd hate to see them spend the money on a server only to find out that the errors are caused by a software issue unrelated to the load of the shared server. -------------------- Kabel et ha-emet mi-mi she-omro.
