It's possible. There are plenty of sites that will do it for you.

Some sites are slower, some allow only a limited amount per time period. The easiest way to download from youtube is through a firefox plugin.
There are many, check out addons.mozilla.org, but I found unPlug to be the best. (unplug: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2254. Video DownloadHelper 3.1: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006, search for more) Unplug may not be compatible with FF3, but dont assume that until youve checked their forums. Today's giveaway at http://www.giveawayoftheday.com is called VideoGet - It is software that downloads and converts videos from all the major sites.
[That's a site that offers one paid program every day for free - if you miss it, the software usually repeats every 9 months or so. They are known for having a lot of convertors and screen savers, but sometimes have just what you need.] It looks like it should be just what you need - but only if you move fast. Oh, and in the thread there, they mention that VLC will play flv's - that is probably easier than converting your download.
