Considering the amount of effort one has to exert to txt versus talk, I would think it would be MORE inappropriate than saying something in passing to someone.

Does it not count as communication? Talking is assur, pens probably would have been, etc.
But assur or not, when you're talking to the Melech Malchei Hamlachim, you don't text. If you would do that while talking to a mortal king, you could be sentenced to death.
