What anti-virus software would you recommend? Free is better, but my friend (who this is for) would be willing to pay if necessary.

I've heard that Avast is good, but that it is also a CPU drain. My friend's laptop also only has 256mb RAM.

I second AVG.

I used to use avg but switched to NOD32.
I have a free trial that I can email you if your friend wishes to give it a try, comes with updates and all.

PM if you interested, its a long trial

The laptop needs more RAM, call local computer stores and see if they have used RAM if money is an issue - a friend of mine upgraded (doubled) hers for $15.
AVG 8.0 is a resource hog, but it needs to be. Windows is so vulnerable it's sad. You can disable a lot of the services in it to lighten it up, and use FireFox to keep things secure.
And try Ubuntu!

AVG and Avast are the best two I've used.

I recommend ThreatFire. Also, SpyDoctor from the same company (free through Google Desktop) seems like decent anti-spyware.

Thanks for your input. My friend's mom just passed away, so I can't install anything on her computer right away, but I'll do so in a little while.

What kind of laptop do they have? I bought 512MB and never used because it was the wrong type. If she has a mac, she's welcome to have it.

Our tech guy also recommends AVG.

IIRC, it was an HP Compaq. Not sure of the model number.
