Do you bike? Is it for work? Pleasure?

I recently bought a Trek 7.2 FX with hopes of soon riding to work. For now, I'm building up my exercise tolerance.

I'm in Baltimore, sorry. But if you ever come here, there are some great trails! And yes, I'm male.

Whilst I appreciate the excellent exercise and planet-saving qualities of cycling, can I just put a word in on my old hobby horse?

I don't know about where you are but here in London I am seeing it more and more; adults and older children cycling on the pavements, often at high speeds. Even if adults do cycle in the road, they seem to think traffic laws don't apply to them. They jump red lights, making it dangerous for us pedestrians crossing the street. I can't count the number of times I have come THIS close to being mown down by a cyclist. Most come up silently from behind so all it takes is for me to quite legitimately weave across the pavement at the instant he comes up, and I'm done for.

In fact a cyclist did kill a teenager just recently. He was riding on the pavement and, approaching a group of girls yelled "move out of the way cos I'm not stopping!" They didn't, and he knocked one down. She hit her head on the pavement and died.

Was he jailed? Was he heck. A 2000 pound fine and some community service. Makes me sick.

iirc, bikers in NYC have to follow the same rules that traffic/cars do. They aren't allowed on sidewalks I thought (unless they're kids). TransAlt would probably have more info on the laws and rules to abide by (and they have/had great route maps all over the 5 boroughs!).

Here's a neat site for NTC bike riders.
Enter your beginning and ending destinations and it will direct you to the safest route.

They're not allowed on sidewalks here either over the age of 12. Trouble is, cyclists seem to think the law doesn't apply to them and if the police don't actually catch them at it, they don't take any action.

Cyclists riding fast on sidewalks bother me also.

I've never encountered a bicycle on the sidewalk that didn't sound their bell. I have a bigger problem with tustusim that think that just b/c they can fit on the sidewalks, they should. And people who park in such a way on the sidewalk that it's impossible to maneuver around them, and you have to go into the street to get by.

That story is horrific. How is that not manslaughter?
