Erm so last night I spilled a tiny bit of juice on my laptop. Next thing I know, it froze, and then just died. It is off, and does not respond to the power button. 100% dead.

ohmy.gif

What am I supposed to do with that?

Can I take the hard drive out?

Will it fit into any other laptop? (I.e. can I take it out of the dead Dell, and put it into an IBM to retrieve the data?)

Do I need to buy a new motherboard?

Crazy.

It's impossible to tell....
It could be something small or you could have fried the whole thing. In general it's not worth it to replace the motherboard on a laptop, but it may not be that bad......

The drives SHOULD be compatible, but nowadays they have switched to SATA drives instead of IDE so if it is old it may not work in a new laptop...

I would suggest getting a cheap USB enclosure or the standalone cable, and backing up that way.......

What does that mean? Remove the HD from the laptop and stick it into this USB enclosure, and connect it to another computer via USB? Will the HD fit into any of these enclosures? What is a standalone cable?

Do it the easy way: take out the hard drive and take it to a place like Micro Center and have an employee show you what cable and/or external enclosure to use.

Yes it should fit into any 2.5" Enclosure (just make sure it is is correct for the particular HD either IDE or SATA).
The cables are the enclosure without the "enclosure" and allow you to plug in the bare drive, but is obviously not a long term solution.

But I would get the laptop checked out, it might not be as bad as it seems......

This happened to me once (though I don't remember if it died completely). I shook out the computer and blow dried where the spill was and it was fine after it dried. If it happened last night though it may have nothing to do with being wet.

I have read more than once about a home remedy that works, funnily enough.

You take the laptop and put it in a bag of rice. It pulls out the moisture. Someone wrote that she read this tidbit and decided to try it for her camera that was plunked into a lake. It started working again.

Worth a shot.

Well I tried bringing the vacuum cleaner and sucking out the moisture, and that was a dumb move, because I ended up sucking out one of the keys from the keyboard. d'oh.

Sorry, but that's totally rofl.gif Leave it powered down and see if it will work tomorrow when dried out. Next time, as soon as any liquid is spilled, turn the laptop upside down to drain it and power it down until it's completely dry inside.

I guess you all have me on block because the blowdryer idea is a real good one. It gets rid of the moisture the fastest and you can have it back up and running right away.

Do NOT use a blow dryer!!!

Are you crazy!!! The last thing the CPU needs is heat.

A fan you could use. What you should have done is turned it off (pulled out the battery) and turned the laptop upside down immediately and let it sit like that for 24 hours.

Anyway at this point you could open it up and take the parts out so they can air dry. I suspect something got short circuited since you didn't cut the power right away.

There is a cold setting on most blow dryers.
