I grew up with Uncle Moshy. As I looked through a bunch of songs he has on YouTube I'm only now realizing the influence he had on my childhood. (Some positive but somethings I don't think were so positive.) Anyway I never knew he was Canadian. And I never knew he was Chabad. Though it retrospect it makes a lot of sense.

Anyway did you grow up with Uncle Moshy and do you buy Uncle Moshy for your children?

One last thing, I don't know if I can think of another individual in the Jewish Music industry in the last 30 years (yes, I know, you're yelling "Carlebach") that had a bigger impact on Orthodox Jewish children and even adults in North America.

Yes, and he also held the light for the photographer at my brother's bar mitzvah in 1990.

He was from Toronto however.

He's still puts out albums and his old ones still sell as well.

I loved Uncle Moishy as a kid. His songs seemed to have positive messages. The refuah shelaima song, the brachos song - what could be wrong with his stuff?

I don't know how old he is but he's not old enough to have been around when i was a kid. I did like him for my own kids' entertainment though. His wife and i took childbirth exer cise classes together.

When my kids were young Uncle Moshy used to stay with us when he came to do a concert in London. He stayed with us on 3 separate occasions.

I love the songs. And this one was one of my favorites.

But I think this is where Jews get the idea to wait for a great shofer before being magically transported to yerushalayim.

I think all he songs are incredible simplified. Which is a good thing for children. The problem is I'm not sure people ever grow up from these simplified ideas!

Like Hashem is here, Hashem is there... truly everywhere. Yet based on that childhood influence most adults don't ever understand that G-d is both immanent and transcendental.

His tendency to treat boys and girls equally, addressing both as equal audiences for his message is not tznius and wrong on so many levels. He should implicitly address the message to boys. That doesn't stop little girls from listening, but they shouldn't be directly addressed together with the boys.

And to include both frummy kids and seemingly modern-orthodox kids in his videos is disturbing. It send kids a mixed message and is a little too "inclusive" for my tastes. It screams of relativism. They're not going to be mixing in real life, ch'v. MO should be not be welcomed into homes with charedi children. Why suggest as much in the videos?

You're kidding - right?

1. He addresses young children - not teenagers. There is no tznius issue.
2. Just because frum society is rather segregated that doesn't mean that's how it should be. Sure there are fundamental philosophical disagreements between the groups, but we are all Jews. A fundamental part of Judaism is to be nice to people. What's wrong with presenting and promoting ideals and hoping the kids he impacts grow up to make the world a more inclusive place?

:D Well I had to find SOMETHING wrong with the guy. :D
so, yeah, I'm kidding. Figured it was obvious, sad that it's not obvious! Is this so reasonable a stance that one could actually hold such an opinion? Wait - don't answer that.

I watched some Uncle Moishy DVDs with my nephew and was suitably impressed with Uncle Moishy and glad that my nephew was watching it rather than some of the other Jewish media out there. I did ask my brother how this inclusiveness was ok in more traditional chassidish worlds, etc, and why wasn't it banned, and he suggested that actually many frum families wouldn't let their kids watch Uncle Moishy. I don't know if that's true.

Nope, not obvious at all.

I think Uncle Moishy is wonderful. Tzedaka, good middos, listening to your parents, being honest - all that stuff is wonderful. He manages to teach values without being preachy (something Veggie Tales fails miserably at).

I have never heard of Uncle Moishy being banned at any frum home. However some families don't want ANY videos so they just listen to the tapes.
