Hi there,
Ok, now that the final countdown is on, we are sort of desperate to find Dh a job. Currently he works in logistics for a telecom company. I am happy to send a copy of his CV to anyone who might be able to help with a job commutable from Ramat Beit shemesh. Please, we are rather desperate for a source of income. His Hebrew stinks but he is willing (and expecting) to go to a "business ulpan" that meets at night in order to learn. He is a very contentious and diligent worker with experience in business administration, logistics, and telecom costs analysis. He has also created systems to manage efficiently up to 1500 units in constant flux. If anyone knows of anything that might be even the tiniest lead it would be greatly appreciated if you either let us know or pass on his CV. Thanks so much for any help you can offer, HD -------------------- "You gotta put down the ducky if you wanna play the saxaphone" -Ernie

Why didn't you find him a job before you committed?
This is not just directed at you. It's directed towards al those who make ALiyah and are all excited, and then have to move back 'home' because they can't make ends meet. mosheshmeal . -------------------- If I don't write to empty my mind, I go mad. ~Lord Byron |

Finding a job before you get there is mostly unheard of. We know that he is in a field where he will find work, it is just a matter of time. B'h we are in a position where we will not need to run home if he does not find a job in record time, but we are now in the "final countdown" where looking for work is the next hurdle.
He is employable, he is good at what he does, and it should not be too bad searching, but now is the time where we are casting the lines as far as we can while we look. Believe me, this was not a decision we made lightly. On the other hand, when we met with the aliyah adviser and with the job centre they both told us that looking any earlier than a few weeks (not making contacts as that is something we started doing as soon as we started to consider moving as an option, actually applying for jobs) would only leave potential employers saying "What, this guy again? Didn't I see this CV a month ago? Why does he still not have a job?" -------------------- "You gotta put down the ducky if you wanna play the saxaphone" -Ernie

Learning the language is surely a vital preliminary before he becomes employable? Is there any way he can start learning it before you make aliya?

unfortunatly no. We go in 3 weeks. He has been working at it since we made the decision (And there are a number of reasons for deciding this is the right time to go), but it is still in the "needs a heck of a lot of work" stage.

First, let me say that I wish Mr. Duck have an easy time finding a job. Unfortunately I don't know any contacts in his line of work, but it's worth checking out AACI Jobnet, there's a link there for English if Hebrew is a problem.
Beyond that, the rest of my remarks here are directed at others planning aliya, and not intended to discourage them, but to help them plan effectively. I'm afraid I have to agree with the people who said that finding a job before moving isn't all that common. When the company I work for was smaller, I did the technical interviews, we would have been reluctant to interview someone who didn't already live here, because as much as someone insists that they have an ironclad aliya date, things happen. We'd have been happy to talk to someone who came on a pilot trip, or who we ran into on a business trip abroad, but the most we'd say is "come back and talk to us once you've arrived, although we can't promise there would be an opening then". I think we'd also be unlikely to hire someone with poor Hebrew. Even though we have other English speakers in the company, and most everyone is capable of communicating in English to some extent, we hold meetings in Hebrew, talk to local customers in Hebrew, etc (overseas support is mainly handled from an office outside the country). While there are companies where English is the primary language, I don't know how one would locate them. Given the above, my recommendation for olim would be to 1) plan to finish ulpan before staring work, 2) have enough money set aside to make this possible (and add money to allow for a job search that may not be immediately successful). -------------------- I am DEMANDING that the Rabbonim start screaming about this.

When all else fails, IDT is hiring.
Remember, it's always easier to find a job when you have a job. I suggest him taking a full time Ulpan for 6 months, if you can swing it. I'm assuming this is not a 20 year old in question? |

IDT is on our list
He will stay in ulpan as long as he can until our funds start looking scarce... If we each find some part time anything jobs, we should be able to make it the 5 month he is entitled to okay, and he will look at the same time... -------------------- "You gotta put down the ducky if you wanna play the saxaphone" -Ernie

Funny enough, that is sort of the original plan. He has been told to contact a company he sells for here that is manufactured there when he gets there.
