I sometimes hesitate to go out with non-Americans because I'm not so great at deciphering foreign accents.

Whats the worst that can happen? You think your date says a different word than the word s/he intended? So?

Once I went out with a foreign guy and at one point I literally spent five minutes trying to figure out what he was saying. It was like a game of Password or something. At other points in the date I found myself just nodding and agreeing even though I didn't have a clue as to what he was saying and it was just too much effort to keep asking him to repeat himself.

laugh.gif That reminds me of a woman I once worked with who wasn't even foreign but was from Detroit and I guess had a particularly strong accent. Every now and then she'd say a word that would leave me completely stumped and exactly like you said, it was like playing a game of password. The funny thing is, I've met lots of other people from Detroit and never had a hard time understanding them.

As for dating and foreign accents, depending on the accent they can be pretty sexy. I love Aussie and Kiwi accents. wub.gif

By foreign, don't I really mean "anyone not from Brooklyn"? biggrin.gif

French.

most accents lend an air of romance, mystery and intrigue if not so thick as to not understand. that would be a headache, indeed. unless, you just smiled a lot.

Maybe not, because you know Canadians talk just like Americans, except for "aboot." tongue.gif

Right. If it were casual dating it really wouldn't matter if I didn't always understand the guy.

Someone recently told me I have a real New York accent. Problem is, I can't hear it. I sound normal, everyone else has an accent.
(and it's aggravated by my inability to place the correct stress in the word "accent")

Worse yet, they might return home.

We may sound like some Americans, but I can assure you that we don't sound like we're from Brooklyn.

And FTR, I don't say "aboot"! tongue.gif:
