Laws for Erev Tisha B’Av& Tisha B’Av Shabbos August 9th & Sunday August 10th 2008 1. As Erev Tisha B’av is Shabbos, August 9th, we can eat meat and drink wine the entire Shabbos. 2. The procedure is to daven Mincha early and then to return home and eat a full meal as shalosh seudos. The customary Tisha B’av seudah mafsekes of simply a hard boiled egg, bread, and water is not eaten this year. 3. All eating and drinking must end by sunset. 4. On Tisha B’av we are not permitted to eat, drink, bathe or wash, use perfumes, lotions, creams, etc. for pleasure (as opposed to medical needs), have marital relations, and wear leather shoes. 5. Leather shoes should be removed after Shabbos. One should say “Baruch Hamavdil bain Kodesh L’chol” before changing shoes and doing any melacha. 6. Maariv. Although the customary Havdalah is not said on Tisha B’av night, the insertion of “Ata Chonantanu” is said. The bracha of “Borei Meorai Ha-aish” over candlelight is said after the ma’ariv shemonah esrai before the reading of Eicha. If it was not said then, it can be said anytime Saturday night. The bracha on spices is not said. 7. From after Shabbos, until midday on Sunday, one should not sit on a chair that is higher than 12 inches. 8. Anyone who is ill should not fast. A sheilah should be asked to determine if one is halachically ill. 9. Deodorant may be used on Tisha B’Av. 10. Only select areas of Torah may be studied on Tisha B’av. For example, Eicha, the story of the destruction (Gitten 56b, Sanhedrin 104b), the halachos of mourning and Tisha B’av. 11. On Tisha B’av we do not greet each other with “Good Morning” or any other greeting. 12. Smoking is permitted after midday, Sunday, if it is done in private. (It is highly preferable never to smoke.) 13. Some have the custom of visiting a cemetery after the Kinos at Shacharis. 14. Tallis and Tefillin are worn at Mincha, not at Shacharis. 15. Conclusion of the fast. Havdalah must be recited on Sunday night before breaking the fast. Wine or grape juice may be used. The Havdalah consists of the bracha on the wine and the bracha of Havdalah. Spices are not used. 16. This year we do not eat meat, drink wine (aside from Havdalah), bathe, cut hair, wash clothing, and listen to music until midday on Monday, August 11th. Oh, I thought you meant, Dude, Tisha B'av RULES! like with the van-halen-fan hand gesture and everything. It does. The one time I was truly euphoric about being Jewish was on tishah b'av, during kinos. -------------------- it's not that h has gotten boring. it's that we've become more jaded. bring the luster back in. polish your souls. learn to enjoy again. --int999 (ok, ok, I concede!)

Low blood sugar? Possibly. I was at a shiur last night. The speaker discussed emunah and bitachon in difficult times. And he said, some righteous ones used to be upset if nothing bad happened to them, as they saw it as a sign that God forgot about them. In the year that this happened, I still bought that, and the realization that God was punishing us because he cared and wanted us to be close to him and better people made me happy. -------------------- it's not that h has gotten boring. it's that we've become more jaded. bring the luster back in. polish your souls. learn to enjoy again. --int999 (ok, ok, I concede!)

Well, Rabbi Akiva laughed when he saw that fox in the ruins of the Temple.

(emphasis added) I was talking about the Rabbi's reasoning, not yours. I've always felt that Judaism is by far one of the most masochistic religions out there. -------------------- "Shake off all the fears and servile prejudices under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Christianity is worse. (Yes, I know that you wrote 'one of' and not 'the'.) In what sense? I think that Judaism fosters a much more masochistic world view than Christianity. -------------------- "Shake off all the fears and servile prejudices under which weak minds are servilely crouched. In what sense? I think that Judaism fosters a much more masochistic world view than Christianity. People suffering for others' sins is pretty bad. Then again, they have that is Judaism too. -------------------- it's not that h has gotten boring. it's that we've become more jaded. bring the luster back in. polish your souls. learn to enjoy again. --int999 (ok, ok, I concede!)
