So if I understand this, a breakaway region of a a breakaway republic is trying to re-unite with the country that the the breakaway republic broke away from.
Although naturally I would want to take any side against russia I cant help but feel that Georgia is in the wrong in trying to keep South Ossetia even though they;ve had 2 referendums declaring they want to be part of russia.

No, they want their own republic. But they will be pro-Russia, like Georgia is pro-US.

90% of the population carries russian passports, which was russia's pretense for rolling in the tanks ("we're protecting russian citizens").

My 2¢ here:

Russia is only doing this to show the west that they're back as a military superpower, and not out of any genuine support for South Ossetia.
The west is backing the morally wrong side just to show they can challenge Russia. This has already happened before in Kosovo...

If the west really had any moral fiber they'd offer Georgia an ultimatum: leave South Ossetia or forget about joining Nato or the EU. If Russia had any moral fiber they'd be using diplomatic channels or at worst asking for economic sanctions instead of full fledged war.

Why is Gruzia morally wrong?

Isn't South Ossetia part of Gruzian territory? Should Miami be allowed to declare its independence from the U.S., and become an independent Hispanic nation, now that so many Cubans have rafted to the city that it's now a majority Hispanic?

Actually, if Dade county actually had a majority Cuban population, and this population had been there before it became US territory, and it bordered Cuba it would have a very strong argument for cecession from the US.

ETA: Why do I get the feeling that there has had to be someone in Savannah or Atlanta who turned on the evening news and heard that "Russia is attacking Georigia" and rushed out screaming frantically "Dem Reds are Comin!!"?

Why this condition in particular?

I don't know whether it is appropriate to laugh in this tread but I giggle.

If you say so ohmy.gif

Anyway, this morning I thought it was over, with reports of Georgia pulling out of Tskhinvali to meet Russian cease-fire conditions. But tonight I'm reading that Russians bombed Tbilisi, and Georgia is pulling troops out of Iraq and redeploying to fight in Osetia. I have no idea what's going on. A Georgian lady I know is spending a lot of time in church this weekend...

Georgians should've known how Russia would respond. Maybe they figured with Putin in China and Medvedev being new at this, they could get their territory back but...
