halacha is made up of a number of components. one is general klalim. some of my favorites are "our rabbis of blessed memory did not uphold their ordinances at the expense of personal dignity" and another "we don't make a fence for a fence" and also "we don't cast aspersions on the customs of our forefathers".
then you have the reasons for a general halacha, such as the one about not wearing your clothing inside out, which is lest people mock hashem and you desecrate the name thereby. this reason could also be applied to taking baths, wearing respectable clothing, as well as making sure that your clothes fit and are clean and that your shirt is tucked in. and then you have the particular laws, such as it is permitted to walk in a karmelis even though you descovered that your talis kattan is passul, lest you be humiliated by taking it off then and there. or like the other halacha, you shouldn't show your seams. so which is ikkar? The reasons and the klallei hapsak, or the particular laws themselves? I was always taught that when was say halacha doesn't change, its the reasons and the klalim that don't change, even though the particulars of the law and and do change, as a result of differing situations interacting with the klalim. (for instance, washing during the nine-days.) so what do you think? -------------------- "well has beruria spoken"

I think NOT have you ever heard what people say about frum people and about g-d when the boys in black pants and white shirts and suits don't tuck their shirts in? it so clearly applies under this circumstance. any honest person will tell you that they find it hard to respect someone who has their shirt tails hanging out, at least if its a button up shirt. -------------------- "well has beruria spoken"
