France banned a channel aimed at babies.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080820/ap_on_...nce_baby_tv_ban --- The council's ruling aims to prevent the development of such programming on French channels. It also orders French cable operators that air foreign channels with programs for babies to broadcast warning messages to parents. The messages will read: "Watching television can slow the development of children under 3, even when it involves channels aimed specifically at them." Television viewing hurts the development of children under 3 years old and poses a certain number of risks, encouraging passivity, slow language acquisition, over-excitedness, troubles with sleep and concentration as well as dependence on screens," the ruling said. --- So what is a good rule? -No unsupervised TV watching? -No videos even briefly? -No vegetating in front of the TV but okay for a short time? -Are those videos in minivans ok for long road trips? A friend of mine rocks his baby to sleep to some really nice children's songs that he sings from a karaoke DVD. -------------------- Kabel et ha-emet mi-mi she-omro.

So what is a good rule? Moderation, as with everything in life. To be honest I don't see why babies would need a tv channel, there are plenty of things in every home that fascinate them and keep them busy and active. -------------------- I've come to think of Europe as a hardcover book, America as the paperback version.

I think it's a good rule.
Since when do babies watch TV in the first place? -------------------- "If they would allow one dead soul to visit an assembly of philosophers, that would be the end of all their teachings."

TV is good for babies as long as it's done in moderation. They absorb everything.

They absorb information. TV = more information. I would restate 'they absorb garbage, TV = garbage'. How much actual information is available there vs. how much actual garbage? I think taking my kids to various library programming is a lot better and actually may contain some 'information'. -------------------- Many people wish they could change their life, when all they really need to do is change their attitude towards life. - Sharon

I mean specific videos like Baby Einstein that are geared to babies. -------------------- |

I would restate 'they absorb garbage, TV = garbage'. How much actual information is available there vs. how much actual garbage? Not that I'm for a baby TV channel, but if anything that would be a pro for a baby channel. Instead of setting the channel to something that may have garbage on, people would probably feel more comfortable leaving it on a channel that had baby-specific content. -------------------- When a small man casts a large shadow, the sun is setting.

ehh..I still see no reason why they're 'good' for babies and we still don't let our babies watch those. Don't they sell lots of toys geared towards improving cognitive development, the idea I think is that these videos also aim to do it by engaging kids somehow. (I think maybe a newborn has different needs than a two-year-old in this respect). -------------------- Kabel et ha-emet mi-mi she-omro.

Good rule
TV for babies is a scam. -------------------- Abba: I'm going to be up on the roof so if you hear a thump...
Nechama: Should I come running? Abba: By that point its probably too late and you should call hatzalah |

the same reason there are videos for them. so that mommy can go to the kitchen while the baby is sat mesmerized opposite of a tv screen. I disagree with this philosophy.
