It started off as a quirky zany story about an "avid outdoorsman", got wackier with people saying that the timing coincided with the annual nude hiking week on the Trail, and then suddenly took a turn for the more banal. Though referring to your mistress as "dear, dear friend" and running off in a state police car, and a weird cover story is still pretty weird.

Actually he could have fixed it pretty easily. All he needed to do was say it was an affair with the woman's husband and he was joining the Democratic Party and all would have been forgiven.

If Republican, refer to a Democrat.
If Republican, refer to a Democrat.
If not for my attempts to be a "good Christian" (i.e. someone who follows what Jesus taught and not what the Pauline Epistles taught), I doubt I'd be an orthodox Jew right now. Shemmy

It was perjury, obstruction of justice and abuse of power arising from the Lewinsky scandal and the Jones lawsuit as well.
Oh, and in reference to making Gov Sanford sound like a hypocrite:

Okay, so the real problem is that this guy isn't just anyone, he's an executive, and that means he has a duty to the people to head his State.
Funny thing is... according to Orthodox Judaism... he's a normal guy. We hold that if you have "dear, dear friends" who happen to be female, it is entirely normal - we expect - things to not be platonic for very long. Hence, yichud, negiah, and all that other stuff.
