If they are south of Steeles Ave., they may as well be on the moon.
Yeah, yeah, yeah... I've heard it before. Too bad, because unlike you, I do know other people who use these. And don't worry, you didn't see me volunteering to drive up to Thornhill with them.

Can either you [or Melech] please explain to me what exactly is so charming about a candy sunny side up egg, because I'm really not getting it.
And Melech, tomorrow morning is recycling day in large portions of Toronto [and perhaps Vaughan], so I bet if you drive around you could pick up all the plastic egg cartons you want this evening from neighborhood blue boxes without a whole lot of effort.

No, but you could get little pinwheel cookies (or actual pinwheels) to represent wind energy, and make cups of "dirt"* to plant it in.
*yes, that's an actual confection.

I personally don't find any of these themes cute. I think just a beautiful basket with hamentashen and other goodies that is tastefully put together is nice. I think doing these themes must be a frum thing, as is filling them with candy. I've certainly never seen any like the things I've seen described on this thread and past threads on this topic.

to each their own.
The majority of people we send shaloch manos to we do through beis yaakov so they end up getting a gift basket from bais yaakov and most of the money goes to tzedakah [well, not really tzedakah; to beis yaakov].
And we send a few 'real mishloach manot' to fulfill the real obligation.
but yes, we go around with the kids with a fun themed shaloch manos for their friends every year simply because it's fun. healthy it's not always [certainly not this crud], but once a year it's considered fun. <shrug>.
some people do fun themes. some families write poems. all sorts of things. it's purim.

Yup. I honestly think this theme and candy business is a specifically frum aspect of doing mishloach manot. The baskets I've seen are very different from that.

I guess as long as you all enjoy yourselves.

and most of the ones we get and the vast majority of years the ones we do similarly are not candy. sorry if you find doing an unhealthy theme one year is offensive.

yup. it's fun to brainstorm ideas. it's fun to get the things together. it's fun to deliver them.
if you saw our kitchen and the types of food we normally eat, maybe it would be easier to appreciate how, as pleats said above, it's a real nahafoch hu [opposite]. that's what's so funny about it. everyone knows my wive's kitchen is as healthy and organic as it gets. I make fun of the bierkenstock wearing granola crunching crowd on h.com, but it's with a real twinkle in my eye.

No, I never wrote that I found it offensive, but I don't get the connection between Purim and candy either.

I think frum people do candy and nosh a lot of the time because it's cheaper than buying real food - compare a small bag of jelly beans to a tray of store-bought hamentashen. Now, some frum people go all=out with all kinds of crazy tchotchkes or with really nice, expensive goodies, but I think when you're doing 30+ mishloach manos, you tend to either do home-made goodies, or small bags of candy/nosh.
OK Now, I'm sure of it. I DO  you........
