It's not half the problem if the're in the cover, even better if they are in a bag as well [Kis B'toch Kis].
Some suggest putting some money in the Pushka as sort od an "attonement".
If they fell hard, and got beaten up nicely, you may wanna stop be the Sofer to make sure everything is OK.

Right. My ingrained Chabad education made the automatic switch from fasting to Tzedaka. [See Tanya Iggeres HaTeshuva]nothing about fasting for the day?You should pick them up!

Really?thats 40 days.I thought fasting for a day was only when a sefer Torah falls?

That would be more like 60 days.You've fasted 40 days? Was it an ibbur Ramadan?

In my elementry school an 8th grader tripped when carrying the Torah back to the Arron... he managed to hold the Torah upright but the handles hit the ground. They made every one fast till chaztos. (I think the Rabbaim fasted the whole day.)
