NEW YORK (AP) -- A 21-year-old man jumped to his death from the Empire State Building, police said Thursday.
Dovid Abramowitz had bought a ticket to the 86th-floor observation deck but found his way to a vacant office on the 66th floor, where he jumped Wednesday afternoon, said police spokesman Lt. John Grimpel. His body was discovered on a sixth-floor landing.
Abramowitz, who lived in Manhattan, did not work in the building, said Detective John Sweeney. Sweeney did not know how the man reached the 66th floor office. Police also had no information on whether a suicide note was left behind.
More than 30 people have committed suicide at the building since it opened in 1931. Before Wednesday, the most recent was believed to have been in 2004, when a man jumped from the observation deck.
The 102-story skyscraper reaches 1,454 feet to the top of its lightning rod.

"How could you have a slogan like "freedom is slavery" when the concept of freedom has been abolished? The whole climate of thought will be different. In fact there will be no thought, as we understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking—not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness."

Why do you assume the "we have failed him?" Maybe he just lost a fortune. Maybe his gf dumped him. Maybe he was mentally imbalanced. Who says his jump had anything to do with religion?

A careful reading of the subject title and subtitle will reveal this intent. If "we" referred to society in general, the title should have read "Person Commits Suicide".

No, 'we' can refer to the frum velt, whose members are supposed to (by definition of being 'frum') be concerned about the welfare of fellow Jews. Veohavta ...

That's how I read it, but Mordechai's point is still valid. Change 'religion' to 'frum society'. (And: Know Your Posters)

The day will come when I will be able to properly and fully express myself in my sig. Today is a sad day.

We don't know the circumstances. (At least I don't) What about Dan L'Kaf Zechus in this situation. There is still a grieving family left behind.
Isn't everything hashgacha pratit?
I would think that saying "HaMakom yinachem..." should also be in order.

Nowadays we hold that someone who commites suicide was sick and therefore there is a shivah. There is nothing wrong with saying BDE either way. And just a point of fact, if we held there was choice there would be no shivah.

News flash: Christians are supposed to do the same, as preached by Yoshka, no? And I'll bet that 99%+ of the world's religious population subscribe to The Golden Rule as well.

I think that yes, this person obviously had needs that weren't being met and we as a community are held responsible for that.
Yes, how very obvious. Why didn't we all notice the danger sooner?!

I think you misunderstood my tone. My point was that we should strive to be a community where no one feels whatever he felt that he made the choice to end his life.
[I think my middle school English teacher just experienced a shudder as I wrote that second sentence.]
