[ex-chasidish]

I grew up among what I perceived as alot of narrow mindedness and hypocricy. I left the fold when I was about 18 ,went to College, read alot and became somewhat educated. I know there are many more like me out there. I am currently looking to begin a support group for us formers.

Welcome to the board! I look forward to hearing your opinions on the various topics posted on H.com. I only hope that you are not "narrow minded," and only see the bad in chassidic life/viewpoints. It would be interesting to hear about both your positive and negative experiences. Nothing can be all bad.

After discussing the muliple identities of some of our fellow H.comers, I can't help but be suspicious that exsatmar is not a unique poster, but in fact, someone posing as a new controversial entity.

Could be totally off base on this one.......

By the way, exsatmar, there are organizations out there to help people transition from the ultra orthodox world into the secular. Check out this web site from Israel:

Shayna, I'm sure it is not permitted at all to lead someone in the direction of such an organization. It's one thing to decide not to be chassidish anymore, but it's another thing to throw off Yiddishkeit altogether. Goodness, who knows, maybe he just moved to Baltimore!

My opinion, FWIW, is that when people throw off their upbringing, it's usually because of an unhappy family life growing up, not because of ideologies.

Well, here's the first clue that my generalizatin might apply to this "exsatmar" person. He wrote, "My family is ultra Chassidic and typically narrow minded, fanatic and intolerant." He didn't say say, my community was narrow-minded, or my education was fanatic, he said, my family is. A freudian slip?

Tell the truth exsatmar, did you have a happy home life growing up? How was your relationship with your parents? If your relationship wasn't great, I'm sure you don't believe that this is why you walked out, but I think it's a pretty safe bet.
