I know a lot of families that check one room with a candle and then switch to a flashlight because of the sakanah.I read that just as you don't check with an "avukah" because you won't check well if you're worried about starting a fire, so do some poskim allow and even encourage use of a flashlight (and overhead electric lights) for places where you're going to be worried about fire even from a single-wicked candle like under the bed.

No idea, I only use it because I get a free packet in the mail every year that has the kit. By definition anything that you get free automatically becomes minhag yisroel (for example we started eating turkey on thanksgiving when shoprite started giving away free turkey, what's more Jewish then free?)where did the spoon and candle thing come from? just because it can be burned with the chametz?

We do that, but still use the feather and spoon for the rest of the house.I know a lot of families that check one room with a candle and then switch to a flashlight because of the sakanah.
