My parents did that, too. I have a vivid memory of standing outside their door one night after a nightmare trying very hard to force myself to cry so that I wouldn't actively wake them up by knocking. As if crying was any better. 
My son whispered loudly so we could hear that he tucked himself back in on the couch so Abba wouldn't have to go to him.
Gee, thanks.
Then 5 minutes later "Abba, is it time to wake up yet?"
"No"
"How much longer?"
Sigh.
It's easier sometimes to just say they should come in and snuggle in bed and keep quiet.
