Anyone else? I would expect based on the number of people that worked, a list of at least 100 who learned in kollel.
Rebbi Shimon
Rebbi Eliezer
Rebbi Yehuda
Rebbi Meir
Rav Kahane
Rav Yochanan
Rish Lakish (after he gave up being a highway robber.)

2) I still don't see 100 or so names. So am I correct in presuming that 99% had jobs?

1) Are you sure about all those?
2) I still don't see 100 or so names. So am I correct in presuming that 99% had jobs?
Yes.
I'm not quite sure it's that high, but clearly a significant portion had jobs as did a significant portion study torah full time. Someone would have to do a comprehensive study that could take months.

How come the Chazal didn't think they were the kohanim that should be supported by the rest of the klal?

the fact that the gemara is replete with vivid descriptions of the hatred amei ha'aretz bore towrds talmidei chachomim, such as rabbi akiva's assertion that when he was an am ha'aretz, he wanted to bite talmidei chachamim "like a donkey", because a donkey's bite breaks the bones. What makes you say that?
"The despotism of heaven is the one absolutely perfect government. An earthly despotism would be the absolutely perfect earthly government, if the conditions were the same; namely, the despot the perfectest individual of the human race, and his lease of life perpetual. But as a perishable perfect man must die, and leave his despotism in the hands of an imperfect successor, an earthly despotism is not merely a bad form of government, it is the worst form that is possible."

And now the rest of the klal loves talmedi chachamim? Daily news from Israel says otherwise.

I don't think so. There are some talmidei chachamim in Israel, but they are not the people in those articles......
