From what I understand, Pope Pius did save some Italian Jews.
Now people still criticize him for not taking a formal stand against the Nazi regime. The church says that it would have been irresponsible since he could do more good behind the scenes without making an enemy of hitler.
On the other hand, the anti-Zionists say that the Zionist stances against the Nazis were irresponsible because by taking them the Nazis were only encouraged in their persecution of the Jews.
The difference of course being that one could argue the Church actually had the power to make Hitler think twice.

The Catholic Church had no power to make Hitler think twice about anything. Hitler put dissenting Catholic priests into camps. I saw a great film called "The Ninth Day" which dramatized this.
Here is a very good site covering the issue of Pope Pius and the Jews: http://popepiusxiian...s.blogspot.com/
