alte reid. it's an ancient debate, possibly going back to the unanswered question at the conclusion of horoyos...

not according to the Rambam. that shailoh is gepaskened like the man d'amar sinai, no?

the Rambam, here, states clearly that the tachlis of the gemara is to engage in the lamdus (which should be obvious to anyone who's learned a blatt or two anyways), he just feels that that whole edifice has been destroyed today, ch'v, and his talmid should, therefore busy himself with the mishnah torah, and not gemara.

the first part of the Rambam's statement is obvious, that the clear tachlis of the gemara is to encourage analysis, critical thinking, and debate, the second part, that we should therefore stop learning gemara, and just learn the mishnah torah, well... let's just say we don't pasken that way.

Another good thing about Daf Yomi. You gain alot of Yidiyos which come back to when the subject arises. For example, just this week:

be that as itmay, the general mehalech in the yeshivos follows the derech of tosafos rather than that of the rambam. even the briskers' focus on the rambam is to 'learn him up' in a tosafistic manner, rather than his own preferred method.
"Spiritual wants and instincts are as various in the human family as are physical appetites, complexions, and features, and a man is only at his best, morally, when he is equipped with the religious garment whose color and shape and size most nicely accommodate themselves to the spiritual complexion, angularities, and stature of the individual who wears it."

"The despotism of heaven is the one absolutely perfect government. An earthly despotism would be the absolutely perfect earthly government, if the conditions were the same; namely, the despot the perfectest individual of the human race, and his lease of life perpetual. But as a perishable perfect man must die, and leave his despotism in the hands of an imperfect successor, an earthly despotism is not merely a bad form of government, it is the worst form that is possible."

Question:

Is there a way to access Gemora with nekudos (punctuation) on line?

Every day, the Daf Yomi, the daf of the day, is posted with nekudos here: http://www.kipa.co.il/daf_yomi/ (click on the Amud)

but it's only that day's daf and then replaced the next day. Where can I access the whole shas with nekudos on line?

(break-off of thread from here:

Let's compare online daf yomi shiurim!

http://www.dafyomiyicc.org/

Young Israel of Century City, Rabbi Yitzchak Etshalom

Really, really fast. No nonsense, pure Gemara. Just enough explanation to make sense, no looking into the Rishonim. Modern Hebrew pronunciation. Website easy to use, archive is extensive and easy to navigate.

If anyone might be interested, we are starting a new Meshechta, Temurah, tomorrow morning (Friday, February 17). Jump aboard!

Helpful resources include the following:

Daily Shiur, usually by R' Moshe Elefant or R' Yosef Grossman, posted in advance on afternoon before: http://www.ouradio.org/daf
or http://www.ou.org/to...mi#browse-torah

Rabbi Sholom Rosner's daily shiur: http://www.projectsinai.org/daf_yomi/

I prefer R' Rosner's shiur, recorded daily in Beit Shemesh, Israel, and posted on the web every morning (Israel time, so you have when you wake up, to listen online or download podcast). You can subscribe to the podcast, as well as the OU's daily podcast, so it automatically downloads on your computer I-Tunes, I-Pod or other mp3.

Also, check out: http://www.e-daf.com/ and http://www.kipa.co.il/daf_yomi/

Of course, there are also live shiurim wherever you may be in the Jewish world.

Hatzlachah!

I just started Daf yomi this cycle and I find that I understand whats going using the Artscroll and then summarize with Summary texts available on line. What I find useful and what I recommend once finished learning your daf, is to print out the Q & A section and see how well you understand the daf.
http://dafyomi.co.il...php?gid=1&sid=4 it should give you an indication if your rushing through the material to quick

In Portland, they're doing the Daf yomi at 5:30am weekdays, which is way too early for me (it's designed to be before shacharis), as I must drive a half hour to get there as it is. I do attend on shabbos, though, as it's in the afternoon (obviously), but must admit a whole lot is explained there even in the few sessions I've attended. I wonder if a lunchtime session could be arranged....
