Ok, you could just PM it as I am curious.

:sigh:

Q: Why is there no Amud Aleph (page 1) in the Gemara?*

A: So Chofetz Chaimers feel like they getting somewhere... *rimshot*

:groan:

* The actual geirsa is "Why does the gemara start on Daf Beis?"

That is cute, thanks. Probably could apply to plenty other yeshivos as well.

Are the daf numbers a din in counting how many dapim you've completed? or a din in being a relativist reference point. so that one can find things in the gemmara. This is very similar to the makhlikes beis hillel beis shmmai on chanukah. Beis shammai counts down. You can only have a natural number of candles. Hence, once you reach 1 candle, you can't count anymore. Hence, because there is a clear impending end to the counting, you can say that you're actually counting the days. Bet hillel's format could go on forever. The day after chanukah, lighting 9 candles would follow the pattern. Each day, the miracle/presence of hashem is greater than the day before. Each day the hallel is greater. And clearly, we pasken by bet hillel. And we don't start in the begging of the gemmara and focus on learning a number of daf. Whether or not you can start on daf beis is the nafkah minah. Ka mashma lan, we pasken by bet hillel. And clearly the yerushalmi paskens by bet shammai.

Last time I checked the gemmara begins on amud aleph. Daf Bet amud aleph...

That would explain what the actual geirsa of the Chofetz Chaim joke is more correct.
