I'm thinking of buying ice skates this year -- at free vs $14 for skating at Bryant Park, it seems almost a no-brainer.

Any tips for buying? Any skates you'd recommend? Keep in mind that I'm a starving student, so I'd prefer cheap and not awesome, but not ridiculously junky. I was thinking of spending $40-60.

How does sizing work? It seems to me that buying in-store is so much more expensive, so I'd rather buy online. Are skate sizes different?

Any other advice?

Thanks!

PS -- I can't wait! We should have a skating meet!

How often will you be skating?

I usually only go a couple of times a year, but that's because I have to think about dropping the money every time (I wanted to go more often).

If it's free, probably once a week for six or so weeks of winter.

hockey skates or figure?
with skates you can really do well second hand. it's worth it to buy a great pair second hand over an okay pair new.

When I was a kid I had Bauer skates... :dreaming: it is so long since I've gone skating

"Spiritual wants and instincts are as various in the human family as are physical appetites, complexions, and features, and a man is only at his best, morally, when he is equipped with the religious garment whose color and shape and size most nicely accommodate themselves to the spiritual complexion, angularities, and stature of the individual who wears it."

"The despotism of heaven is the one absolutely perfect government. An earthly despotism would be the absolutely perfect earthly government, if the conditions were the same; namely, the despot the perfectest individual of the human race, and his lease of life perpetual. But as a perishable perfect man must die, and leave his despotism in the hands of an imperfect successor, an earthly despotism is not merely a bad form of government, it is the worst form that is possible."

I'll look into it! Thanks!

Funnily, I was trying to get my sis to buy some too, but she said she has to save up for Toronto instead. I guess her priorities are straighter than mine. :(

i would suggest to get fitted at a store and then buy online

I just bought my husband a pair on Ebay. I won them Thursday evening, we picked them up Motzei Shabbos, he tried them on, they fitted, he used them Sunday morning, they were great! But they're hockey Bauer ones, I'm not sure which figure brands are good. Best of all we paid £10 for a barely used pair worth around £70.
(Re sizing, it's a half size bigger than his usual size and they're perfect).

Another option you may be able to look into is buying them at your local ice rink (if you have one), over here they sell second hand skates as well as new ones.

This might be a problem if you're using store resources (e.g., a salesperson's time, expertise, etc.) and then not giving them the profit.

I looked for roller skates on Craigslist. Found a pair that I almost bought but ended up buying some at a store instead.

People still use those??
