I keep reading about how in Judaism a person must work and support himself. Yet doesn't this collide with the idea that people can study torah all day and not work? Isn't it fundamentally a part of Torah to support one's self?

Judaism is a multifaceted thing. There is more than one path to serving the Creator. This topic is discussed at length in numerous sources including the Gemara.I keep reading about how in Judaism a person must work and support himself. Seems like you could just do whatever you want and then find scripture to justify it since a person can read one thing and then somewhere else it is contradicted...

Thats why we have an oral tradition.
So you can't decide yourself.

If one has the means (either parent wants to have son only work, or a partner who wants one to learn and share in the Zhut) they can study and not work. If not then go to work.
