some hold you can just stick a tea bag in to a kli shlishi, but the way I grew up and I see it written in most hilchos shabbos is that you should make tea essence (or whatever the word is) before shabbos. Do pple today still use tea bags on shabbos?

Not since the invention of Neste instant tea.

Many hold one way yet many follow the other opinion. "Ask your rabbi."

I use tea bags, never even heard of tea sense until I came to Israel.

And FYI the SA HaRav goes even further and says you can put tea in a kli sheni because it is a "tavlin". I don't but I DO use tea bags nearly every Shabbos.

I just had a test on this :-)
a)do kos shlishi (machlokes)
b)make tea essence by pour hot water over a bunch of tea bags before shabbas and then on shabbas pour tea essence into water and then put sugar

Not only SA ha RAV. R. Soloveichik quoted his grandfather R. Chaim as permitting it even in a kli sheni, precisely because it is tavlin. R. Moshe in Feinstein in a teshuva leans towards being maikil, although in the end he is machmir in deference to the Arukh ha Shulkhan.

Some will even add that before Shabbos you need to place the tea essence (sense?) over the fire until it comes to a boil. Some also leave it on the fire with a blech all Shabbos.
